The Speech-Language Pathology Department at Smyth County Community Hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, consultations, and treatment for infants, children, and adults with communication disorders, including disorders of speech, language, voice, fluency, and cognition-communication.
The department also screens, evaluates, and treats patients who exhibit signs and symptoms of feeding or swallowing dysfunction. These evaluations often include a video swallow study.
Patients in the following high-risk populations are commonly seen for speech/language pathology or swallowing problems:
Autism spectrum disorder
Brain stem injury
Craniofacial anomalies
Dental malocclusion
Developmental disorders
Hearing loss/deafness
History of cleft lip/palate
History of prematurity
Macroglossia
Mental retardation
Neurologic disease/dysfunction (Stroke/TBI)
Oral-motor dysfunction
Respiratory dependency
Tracheostomy
Traumatic birth history
Velopharyngeal Dysfunction (Insufficiency)
Vocal fold pathology or paralysis/paresis
Alternate or augmentative communication systems are developed for patients who lack the physical or cognitive prerequisites of verbal communication.

Physicians, case managers, caregivers, and other professionals are kept informed of evaluation results and patient progress through formal reports, telephone conversations, and patient care conferences.
